about us

Who we are

The Alliance for Integrity is a business-driven, multi-stakeholder initiative seeking to promote transparency and integrity in the economic system. To achieve this goal, it fosters collective action of all relevant actors from the private sector, the public sector and civil society.

The Alliance for Integrity is a platform that offers practical solutions to strengthen the compliance capacities of companies and their supply chains. In addition, the Alliance for Integrity contributes to the improvement of framework conditions by fostering dialogue between the public and private sectors. This is why the Alliance for Integrity is the significant global contact point for businesses countering corruption collectively.

Alliance for Integrity - Impact Narrative English

The Alliance for Integrity is the only business-driven, global multi-stakeholder initiative initiated
by a government which provides support to businesses to collectively fight corruption on the ground. The initiative is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Alliance for Integrity not only takes a moral stance against corruption: the initiative also recognises its impact as an obstacle and impediment to economic prosperity and business success.

Companies themselves are best placed to identify compliance-related risks and can share positive experiences and best practices of how such hazards can be overcome. The Alliance for Integrity therefore considers it vital to ensure that businesses are included at all stages of the implementation of the Alliance for Integrity’s work. Companies and business associations can actively engage in Working Groups where their expertise provides added value, and some are members of the Alliance for Integrity's governance bodies. Finally, the success of the initiative’s compliance training programme is also based on the support and engagement of business representatives who act as trainers and give input to the Support Desk.

The Alliance for Integrity currently operates from offices in our regional hubs in Brazil, Germany, Ghana, India and Mexico; additionally, our compliance training programme is carried out across Latin America. The global network concept is an important aspect of our work, which is why we follow this regional approach.

The Alliance for Integrity brings together multinational companies, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), business associations, civil society, public actors and international organisations. The Alliance for Integrity is in an exclusive position to create this unique global network and provide the platform for the private sector, the public sector and civil society to join forces to create a business world characterized by integrity.

Initiated by a government

The Alliance for Integrity was initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The BMZ's strategy regarding anti-corruption and integrity recognises corruption as a restraint for development. It takes into account the need for all stakeholder groups to be included in anti-corruption efforts. The Alliance for Integrity is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Supporting businesses

The Alliance for Integrity supports companies in a number of ways. To build capacity in the area of integrity, a practice-oriented training programme, access to an online Support Desk that provides answers to compliance implementation questions, guides and handbooks on relevant topics etc. are offered. Moreover, the Alliance for Integrity provides opportunities for peer-to-peer learning and sharing of knowledge, best practice and experiences within its global network.

Corruption can be understood as a problem of collective action. This refers to the fact that in many societies, corruption has achieved a state of acceptance that cannot be shifted by individual actors alone. In such an environment, there exists a stark lack of incentives for individual companies to actively combat corruption.

In the Alliance for Integrity all relevant players from the private sector, public sector and civil society join forces to counter corruption in the business world. Watch this video to learn more about how Collective Action works.

Why it matters

Corruption is a substantial impediment to sustainable development. Preventing corruption therefore contributes to reducing inequalities, it strengthens the rule of law, enables investments, and improves the business environment. The importance of preventing corruption is also reflected in the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16.5: substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms. In line with SDG 17, all relevant stakeholders are being engaged in order to increase integrity. Globalisation interconnects economies at a large scale and the private sector assumes a crucial role in the prevention of corruption.
